Head Custodian – High School

Job Description

 

JOB GOAL:

 

The head custodian is responsible for the overall cleanliness, safety, and maintenance of the high school facility. This role combines hands-on custodial work with supervision of custodial staff to ensure that students, staff, and community members have a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Prior custodial experience preferred, supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  3. Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, and safety procedures.
  4. Ability to operate custodial and maintenance equipment (floor scrubbers, snow blowers, lawn care tools, etc.).
  5. Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, perform repetitive motion, climb ladders, and work in a variety of conditions.
  6. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  8. Experience working in a school is preferred, but not necessary.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Supervision and Leadership
    1. Direct, schedule, and evaluate custodial staff assigned to high school building.
    2. Train custodians in cleaning techniques, safe equipment operation, and proper use of supplies.
    3. Serve as the primary contact for custodial issues in the building.
  2. Custodial and Maintenance Work
    1. Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas.
    2. Oversee set-up and tear-down for school events, athletic contests, and community activities.
    3. Monitor and maintain the building’s heating, ventilation, lighting, and other systems; report issues promptly.
    4. Assist with repairs to furniture, fixtures, doors and equipment as needed.
    5. Ensure sidewalks, entrances, and grounds are safe and accessible, including snow removal and deicing as needed.
  3. Safety and Compliance
    1. Monitor building security, ensuring doors and windows are locked and alarms are set as required.
    2. Maintain knowledge of fire, safety, and health regulations; ensure custodial practices comply with district policies.
    3. Handle cleaning chemicals safely and ensure custodial staff follow OSHA and district safety guidelines.
  4. Inventory and Supplies
    1. Order, track and distribute cleaning supplies and custodial equipment.
    2. Maintain accurate records of supply usage and recommend cost-effective practices.
  5. Collaboration
    1. Work with administrators, teachers, coaches, and outside groups to meet facility needs.
    2. Communicate clearly with staff about maintenance or custodial issues as needed.
